How to deal with the “attribute value / SHORTTAG YES” validation eror

You are giving your web the last touches, you decide to validate your code, basically xhtml and css, but with a tiny copy/paste javascript code to bring some action to the field and you find an error like this: “an attribute value specification must be an attribute value literal unless SHORTTAG YES is specified”

You get scared, think you did it all wrong…

Chill out, probably the answer is very simple: put some Quotation marks between the values. For example, if you have width=710 height=426, change it to width=”710″ height=”426″.

This answer was given by tunait to the question “¿Me podéis orientar sobre la famosa shorttag yes)?”

Cross browser compatibility check tools

So I was doing this important web project and it was almost ready, after validating both XHTML and CSS codes under the W3C standards I had one last thing to look at: the cross browser compatibility. Besides the fact of it being as scary as imaginable, I had one big problem: I’m a mac, and not one of those subject of blasphemy by getting Windows installed, I only run my laptop on a MAC-OS basis.

How was I supposed to look at my baby into the horrible and frightening world of Internet Explorer? Most of my friends are Mac too and all those who are still PC have IE8. The only solution was to rely on some tools to check it for me. And while doing the research to get the right ones I found this must bookmark post, and I just had to share it:

If you are working as a web designer, then you need to test all your design in different web browser. As today top web browsers are Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer. And not all the browser have the same render result to your design code. You have to test and tweak your html code and css code.

Maybe you can say, all i have to do is install all the web browser and open your design on all that browser and see the result. I say yes you can, but how about to test with the older version of that browser? For example Internet Explorer, as today the current Internet Explorer is version 8, how you can test with the Internet Explorer 7 or 6?
Here the online cross browser compatibility check tools to check all your designs:

1. Browsershots
Browsershots is a free and most popular cross-platform multiple browsers compatibility test utility for web designers. Browsershots makes screenshots of your web design in different browsers. In Browsershots database are included all most popular browsers and you easily can check how your website looks in all browsers and OS platforms.

2. Browser Sandbox
Created by Spoon.net, this page allows you run different browsers including IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera right from your browser.

3. Netrenderer
IE NetRenderer is free browsers compatibility tester. With IE NetRenderer you can check how a website is rendered by different versions of Internet Explorer. After beta testing, very soon in IE NetRenderer will be integrated newest version of IE – IE9 and you will be able to see does your website shows errors in this browser.

4. Browsrcamp
Browsrcamp allows you to test the compatibility of your design with Mac OS X browsers. If you dont want spend money you can check compatibility of your design with Safari 3.1.2. Simply add your website url and you will get your website screenshot. But if you want check compatibility with others Mac browsers, you can subscribe for 3$.

5. Adobe Browserlab
Adobe Browserlab is a web hosted service which allows designers to test designs on multiple browsers and operating systems. In this system are included a zoom function and measurement tools like rulers and guides, and the ability to move quickly to specific areas of a screenshot. Browser sets allow designers to customize, edit, and save a combination of browsers to test.

6. Litmusapp
Litmus shows you screenshots of your websites as they look across all major web browsers. After you finished testing, you can get a full compatibility report ready for review by your clients. Litmus have 4 price plans. You can register for free and use only Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 browsers testings or you can choose charge plans.

7. Browsera
Browsera is meant to be used as a testing tool, not just a screenshot tool, and works at the site-level instead of the page level. Browsera crawl the pages on your site and actually test them for layout inconsistencies and scripting errors.

8. IE Tab
IE Tab is Firefox addon that enables you to load webpages in Internet Explorer, without having to open another browser window. Just click a button on the Firefox toolbar and it will open the current page in a new tab that uses the Internet Explorer engine instead of Firefox.

And this for offline application to test your design:

1. IETester
IETester is a free Web browser that allows you to have the rendering and javascript engines of IE9 preview, IE8, IE7 IE 6 and IE5.5 on Windows 7, Vista and XP. It’s useful for web developers to test that their sites work properly in all the most common Internet Explorer versions.

2. Multi-Safari
Multi-Safari is a free browser compatibility testing tool that allows you to check the rendering of your web site using different versions of Safari. Multi-Safari does not allow screen resolution testing.

You’re welcome :)

Followers winning tips for Web Designers by @webgeekly

Here’s my summary to the usefull article posted by Marc von Brockdorff from WebGeekly.com called 10 Tips For Web Designers To Gain Followers on Twitter. It has many obvious things we usually forget and many others we might not have stop to think about. Give it a look and start winning quality followers on Twitter :) .

If you’re a Web Designer who wishes to build a solid list of followers, here are a few basic tips that can help you out:

Have a proper description
Make sure you have a description that explains exactly who you are and what aspects of web design you enjoy. Users will have to judge you by your screen name and description and first impresssions DO count!

Write tweets that are relevant
Forget about personal tweets, post things that other web designers will find useful and keep the majority of your tweet timeline related to web design. Make sure possible followers can see something they’ll love while having a quick glance at your tweets.

Give your opinion
If you read something that triggeres your interest tweet about it, make your opinion known. Also valid for commenting on blogs, do it frequently with intelligent replies and always leave your twitter screenname.

Post only the best links
Don’t become a spammer posting link after link. It’s better to have one great link than 50 mediocre.

Re-Tweet your most important tweets
Tweets get lost every easily in the ‘twitterverse’, sometimes we just need to re-tweet something to make sure as many of our followers possible will see it. But don’t post the same exact tweet, change it making each one unique.

Watch other tweets
See what other web designers are posting, what’s being discussed, and retweeted so you know what type of tweets work best.

Get involved
Tweeting is pretty much a full time job. Get involved, join conversations, other designers will be more inclined to click your links if they have already engaged in a conversation with you.

Re-tweet those who promote you on your website
If someone retweets youlet them know you’re grateful and willing to promote their site to your followers. Thatwill make them much more likely to feature again.

Mention people or websites you’ve featured
If you posted a tweet or a blog post that talks about somebody else, mention them (@screen_name). That way, you will get them to see your post and possibly others if they decide to retweet it.

Actively follow other Web Designers
You need to actively seek other web designers on Twitter and follow them. The more you find, the better and the higher the chances that some of them will follow back.
